Testimonials

“I have spent my entire adult life collecting and baking cookie recipes, many generations old, so I really appreciate the amount of love, research and effort that went into this project. The passion of the author comes through on every page. I have never seen such a wonderful collection. It is also very evident that each recipe was tested many times. Easy to read, ingredients readily available, clear instructions and measurements presented in Standard and Metic. After downloading the Kindle version, I spent an entire cross country flight reading it like a novel.”

“We’ve eaten these glorious cookies for years and I can guarantee I’ve never had better. Anywhere! The Linzer Hearts and other jam cookies are my favorites, but you’ve got to love all the spice cookies and gingerbreads. And omigod, the Ginger Snaps. Best ever.”

Delicious and unusual as the recipes are (I ended up making a third batch of the Chocolate Crinkles, just for me), it’s the commentary that makes this book stand out. The technical things, like the conversion tables and explanation of flours, are valuable, but the authors’ forewards, notes, and commentary within the recipes really make the book. It’s like having a beloved and entertaining friend in the kitchen point out a tip or trick, and commiserate with you over the cookies that don’t escape the pan intact, but not demand to help eat them.

The conversational tone of this cookbook is very enjoyable while tips and tricks are presented. The author is honest about the book not being the best for novice bakers, however, the description of the final projects along with step by step instructions are helpful. I appreciate that there is a clear representation on the skill level required for a particular recipe and yet there is no condescending attitude about taking an easier route. The recipes themselves cause a reminiscent state of mind, cookies from childhood. I am anxious to try several of them but first intend to enjoy the commaraderi presented in the book.”

“Simply put, this is the best collection of traditional cookies that’s ever been compiled. Invaluable, unique, and flat out amazing.”

“I collect recipes, haunting libraries all the time for something cultural I’ve never seen. This is at least 50 books of research all in one volume, and probably closer to 100. Wow. Just wow.”

What a fantastic collection of both the “tried-and true” and the more modern versions of classic cookies from all over the world. Many of these are ones I’ve never felt equipped to try on my own, even though I am a very experienced home baker. With their clear instructions, helpful tips, and enjoyable banter that makes it easy to comprehend, I felt like I’d taken a course in a first-class bakery among friends. I’ve already checked several of their recipes out, and have enjoyed every one. I’m treasuring this so much, and plan on getting a copy for each of my children, too. It’s a keeper.

“I bought this book because of the historic recipes, but it’s full of other great stuff! There are loads of tips throughout that can be used with lots of other recipes and will change my baking for the better. The conversion charts in the front are super useful. And it’s really enjoyable to read. Thank you for such a great resource! I’m already trying to choose what to make this weekend”
